Who doesn't love hearts? Here are a couple examples of student artwork from this year.

Here's a bisque fired heart, ready to be glazed (top photo).

Second photo shows the hard way using prayer for the interior and black for the edges to create good contrast.

Glass marbles are added and the heart is fired again this time to come over five, which allows the marbles to melt.

Traditional Textured Ornaments

Seasonal textured ornaments are part of the Ridgecrest tradition, dating to 2006. A couple of my favorite kindergarten students with their clay ornaments.

 The North Star Slab Roller (kind of like a pasta roller incorporated into a table top) really gets a workout at this time of the year. I use a small plastic coffee lid to cut uniform circles just the perfect size. We talk about the purpose and function of texture on the bottom of our shoe soles, and make the connection to art: adding visual interest.  The students impress a slab-rolled clay disc onto the bottom of their shoe.  The process is completed with name and date inscription and cutting a hole to hang, made by piercing the disk with a drinking straw.  When dried the textured ornaments will be fired and then students will paint their ornaments and then finish them up with glitter glue.

We are working on our holiday ornaments here at Ridgecrest.  We first made paper template to use to cut our slab pieces of clay, next was firing, then painting and finally adding glitter to their ornaments.  Enjoy!

Fall 2015! Back to the blog!

 Hard to believe that it's been a year since my last post. Going to try to  post more regularly now that I've got an iPad! It's hugely exciting that we got six iPads for the room this year, we're just waiting on the covers so that we can begin using them as a class due to the hard concrete floors that are here in the art room. Will be doing self-portraits as soon as we get the covers.

Not exactly Thanksgiving feasting, but definitely comforting.  Looking forward to going to San Antonio for the Texas Art Education Association Convention.   Sure to pick up some new ideas and lots of photos.  Will share when I return!!

Today is the live streaming event for Every Artist Me.  This year's theme is "My favorite story."  I suspect the the site is being overwhelmed with responses.  It took me several tries to get my images posted last night and when I checked the site today, there weren't any images in the gallery.
So...........I have re-entered the images and now I have 2 galleries for Ridgecrest Roadrunners: one without any images and the other with the correct amount of 21 images.  I was going to add more but now I am not sure I am up for it.

I feel so blessed to work with such talented people in our Enrichment Group.  We took the time out to posed with some of the tiaras (before they were broken to fit on the masks) used for the show at Lawndale.

This is how we'll be feeling at the end of  Friday.....grades in, 1st nine-weeks over, and Field Day 2014 Success!!

It has been so busy here that I haven't taken the time to post any new photos.  So I will be posting several this week.
First up is a photo from the Lawndale Art Center Exhibit for Dia de los Muertos.  The show will be open for previews today thru Wednesday October 22.  Closed for silent auction on Thursday and will continue regular hours with Family Day on November 1 from 12pm -4pm.

It's hard to believe that 5 weeks have flown by.  In the art room students are beginning to finish up their first works.

In preparation for the Show at Lawndale Art Center, 5th grade students have crafted their plaster masks and done preliminary sketching and outlining with permanent marker.  Next they will begin adding paint.

Second grade has made some faux ceramic food  inspired by still lifes, Pop Artists, and ofrendas.

They'll be white after firing and ready for paint to make them look more like pepperoni pizzas.

Ms. Tuckett's Fourth Grade Class made Cupcake Containers in the same style:

Kinder is making everyone's favorite first clay project, Pumpkins!

Grades 2-5 are also working on  a special project that will soon be posted to the website, everyartistme.com.  

Most are finished with a few classes catching up to the end!

Well, it's that time of year.  Another class of 5th graders is getting ready to spread their wings.  But first a little unstructured fun time! Best of luck and love to all!

Here are some masks that my 3rd graders are working on.  They are made of foil-covered poster board. They are colored with permanent markers...acrylic jewels, ribbons, pipe cleaners, and feathers add some pizzazz.  Enjoy!

It's been quite a week with the Spring Show installed at the Althareta Yeargin Museum at WAIS.  It will be up for the week with late night on Wednesday April 30 from 5 - 7:30. Will post pictures from the show in 2 weeks.
Here are some pics of bowls inspired by American glass-blowing legend Dale Chihuly.  These are a special project that Ms. Perdomo's second graders were selected to make.

Sunflowers

Getting ready for Mother's Day.  We made flowers with pinch pots.  We are glazing them to look like sunflowers.  This is a project for 1st and 2nd grade.  Next we'll be glazing them.
